Ryan Hall (Team Lloyd Irvin) vs. Henry Matamoros (Team Pedro Sauer)

March 18th, 2008

this is a fun match, Henry went on a public forum bashing our team, our instructor etc. and this was the first time he had a chance to compete against one of our guys, i was glad to be our representative. As you will see at the end of the match he did even want to shake my hand.

PS. Many people ask me what should they do to increase their flexibility. The very first thing that you should do is check out my course www.PilatesForGrapplers.com don’t let the cartoons fool you, the course is simple and effective.

Ryan Hall (Team Lloyd Irvin) vs Rafael “Gordinho” Correa (Team Renzo Gracie)

March 3rd, 2008

This was an alternate match at the Abu Dhabi tournament, they needed a someone to compete in the Absolute Class (open weight) and only being 155lbs Ryan Hall jumped at the opportunity to do it. After some going back and forth the match was confirmed.

Although his opponent was much heavier Ryan went out and stuck to his game plan, toughed out a near submission and was able to finish the fight with what is now one of his trademarked moves. The 50/50 interior heel hook.

Wanna Plan For 2008?

November 6th, 2007

Well it’s 2 months until the the end of the year .

How do you think your year has gone?

Did you improve as much as you would’ve like to improve?

Did you add key elements to your game this year?

Do you feel that you followed your plan if you had one?

These are the types of questions that I’ve been
asking my students and will be asking my students
in our end of the year instructor/student meetings.

The key thing to focus on is that no matter what, our
job is to focus on the upcoming year because, there
is nothing that we can do about the past now.

All we can do is focus on the last two months of the
year, and make sure we have a plan to make 2008 a
better year then 2007.

For example, now is the time to start on your power phase
of your training if you’re into weight training. The
competition year is basically over although this weekend
is the Grapplers Quest, and there are a few more tournaments
that will pop up.

The ‘major’ events are over, you have to put yourself in
a situation for 2008, everything else in 2007 I consider
‘work through tournaments’ meaning, you go for experience,
you go to work different parts of your game, but you should
care less about winning or losing. The tournaments that
you put on your 2007 calendar as ‘major’ events are what
we focused on.

Now if you are a beginner, the concept of ‘work through
tournaments’ won’t apply to you, because you’re just
out their gaining experience anyway.

So what I need to know is if there’s an interest
with you guys and gals for me to share with you
how to plan out your 2008 training season.

Whether it is or it isn’t I will be doing it with
my own students, just like I do every year, but I
thought that if there was an interest in something
like this, I would share some of these things with
you as I’m doing it with my students.

I may even use some of them as an example.

Personally without a plan I don’t think you have
much chance over reaching your goal, or reaching
it as quickly as possible.

PS. If you haven’t seen the new crazy submission
videos that we created for the release of
www.pilatesforgrapplers.com you should check them out.
I had one of the guys on my list send me a video
of him pulling off the move that he was able
to do with his new found flexibility that he
gained with my pilates for grapplers course.

Here’s what he had to say.

*********************************************

Hey Coach,

I just wanted to let you know that I’m now
a believer. I was very skeptical about your
pilates for grapplers course when you first
started talking about it. But I wanted
to learn more, I watched all of the videos
and was simply amazed at the movements.

I’ve been non flexible all of my life, so
I finally decided to give it a try, all I
can say is I’ve been using it for 2 months
now and my flexibility has tripled. I can’t
believe it, you’re the man! I also was able
to do the brabo choke defense ryan showed
in the video at a tournament, without my
new found flexibility I would’ve been
forced to tap for sure.

Just wanted to let you know your products
are helping people over here in Europe.

Sweet Leg Lock Set Up

October 22nd, 2007

Here’s a knee bar set up that you can do when attempting to pass the guard.

And before the skeptics start posting ” WHY WOULDN’T YOU JUST GO FOR THE PASS” or “WHY NOT KEEP IT BASIC AND JUST FOCUS ON PASSING” or “INSTEAD OF DOING THAT YOU SHOULD JUST WORK ON YOUR PASSING MORE” ETC ETC ETC

This is a technique that gives you another option when you’re not able to pass successfully right away. This technique can also result in a pass to the other side with a small transitional switch.

Enjoy, please post your comments at the bottom of the page. Thanks, it’s your comments that make it easier to keep posting more videos.

YOU GOTTA HAVE OPTIONS!

October 22nd, 2007

Yesterday I sent out a video of an omo plata
attack that switched to a back take.

To me it’s a simple equation, you gotta have
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. option to all of your
attacks, and you start building these additional
movements once you master the base move.

Well I saw quite a few post that basically
said

**************************************

Why Not Just Finish The Omo Plata?

**************************************

Well I’m not sure how experienced the
people making these comments are but
it was posted enough that I would like to
address it.

THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE MOVE THAT HAS A 100%
FINISH RATE!

It’s like if I were to show an armlock, wrist lock,
or sweep while having someone in a triangle and
everyone saying, “Why Not Just Finish With The
Triangle”

Because things happen, people defend, angles are
incorrect, the list is long as to why some moves
don’t work.

It’s a reality that although you catch someone in
a triangle, omo plata or RNC, there is no guarantee
that you will finish with that triangle, omo plata
or RNC.

There are people that know how to escape these holds,
I see people get caught in them all the time, I see
people escape them all of the time, the game continues,
you have to transition into the next thing.

Of course if you can finish the initial attack, then
you should, that’s not the point of showing variations
to attacks.

ONE GUY PUT

***************************************************

why not just finish with omoplata? that is
just over complicating jiu jitsu. Simple works
better. Look at ryron gracie…simple but
effective attacks. Thats how he
beat todd and fowler.

**************************************************

What does Ryron Gracie beating todd and fowler
have to do with showing a secondary attack to a
omo plata?

I would bet my life that Ryron has secondary
attacks to all of his moves, he has to, everyone
has to.

I may be wrong on this but this is my belief.

Showing a secondary move/having a secondary move
to your initial attack isn’t over complicating
jiu jitsu. Just because you sometimes see
people finish with their initial attack doesn’t
mean that is the only thing that you can do.

NO JIU JITSU PLAYER ON EARTH IS AT A LEVEL THAT
THEY CAN GO OUT AND JUST DO THEIR INITIAL ATTACKS
AND COMPLETE THEM WITHOUT HAVING TO TRANSITION
TO OTHER ATTACKS!!! NO ONE!!!

Let me prove my point, if there was a person like
this, then in every match that they have, they
would go out, do their initial attacks directly
to the submission.

IT DOESN’T HAPPEN LIKE THAT

No people like Marcelo Garcia can do it alot, he
used to come out, shake handa, then armdrag people
and choke them from their backs, or he would shake
hands, pull guard, x-guard sweep them to their back
and choke them.

Now this example is extremely close but even
Marcelo had to go to his secondary moves, but
imagine if he didn’t have any or didn’t practice
and secondary moves.

The entire point of this is to hammer home my
position that you MUST practice secondary
moves once you get your primary move.

AND IT IS NOT OVER COMPLICATING JIU JITSU

Imagine having a person in an omo plata
who is super flexible and you can’t tap them,
what are you going to do, just sit there in that
position until the time runs out? I bet you would’nt
if you were down on points. You would have to
move, do you let them go back into your guard?
Do you try to sweep them? what do you do?

On the video that I showed yesterday we gave
you an option to take your opponents back, take
it for what it is, AN OPTION, it’s something
that you must have in this game of grappling, the
more options you can create for yourself the better
but of course, all of your options hopefully
ending in a submission.

Take Care and Have a Good weekend, I’m about to
head to the weigh ins for the UFC this weekend
my student Brandon Vera is fighting in the co main
event.

the omo plata back take you can check it out at the

Here’s a Video That You Can Put Into Your Game Plan Right Away, If You Practice It! Very Practical And Extremely Sneaky. Oma Plata To A Back Take!

October 18th, 2007

As you konw at Team Lloyd Irvin, some of us CRAZY guys have what we call “The BJJ Grappling Lab” aka The Mad Grappling Scientist- and although is may seem funny, that’s exactly what goes on, on a daily basis. We are always creating new systems to build on our already successful system, we are always trying to improve our systems, always trying to discover quicker ways for students to learn, quicker ways to make your subconsious mind respond to new techniques, quicker ways to do everything. I could go on and on but I wanted to share one technique that has been in the lab Ryan has been working on and we are quickly working on improving it, it has already been performed in live competition, one student came from out of town and was watching a video session that we were doing with different positions we have been cooking up and he was like WOW this is amazing. So to help spice up your grappling game, try adding this to your oma plata system, if you pull it off in a competition send us the tape and we will send you $100.

Here you go, if the video plays slow just give it some time as many people are watching it and it will be well worth the wait.

As always please post your comments on what you think about the video and our concepts.

What Are You Struggling With

September 24th, 2007

Elusively 2007’s sand in the hour glass is draining faster and faster and faster. Pan Ams and The Worlds have come and gone. My student Brandon “The Truth” Vera will be fighting in the UFC for the very first time in 2007 on October 20, 2007 after not fighting in almost a entire year. Time has flown bye, you can’t get it back, you can only look forward.

Can you believe that there are only 100 days left in 2007?

In January of this year I asked everyone to make a 90 day game plan and then every 90 days we would make the next plan. I’m sure most didn’t and now you have just over 3 months left in the year, before it’s 2008. I promise 97% of the grapplers around the World are going to be very unhappy about what they accomplished in the last 12 months.

Let me give you a quick example of how simple this is conceptually. Every January I have tell my team that I want each person to add get this only “two” throws to their gameplan. They all know that I only expect them to ‘master’ 3-4 throws their entire life. But in January 2007 each of
my students had the task of adding 2 new throws into their game plan. They had an entire 12 months to accomplish this. I gave them 4 - 90 day
blocks to work on it. It’s simple!!!! So why in the HELL will 12 months pass and most won’t know 2 new throws?

It’s the exact same reason I had someone visit my school who had been training for 7 years and he hadn’t mastered ‘one’ single throw. He could ‘kinda’ do a whole bunch of throws but had none mastered. He was bothered as to why he hadn’t had that much success in competition and after asking him a few questions and watching him roll I knew why. The problem was simple, he was a ‘killer’ from the top position, but his guard wasn’t good enough to hold up in the more competitive brown belt ranks. His takedowns were so bad he usually ended up on bottom after getting thrown, was forced to pull guard or lost in a boring stand up match.

Now instead of the example with the takedowns, I could’ve used sweeps, submissions etc. but you get the point and every 12 months you MUST have a plan to make sure that at the end of that 12 month period you’ve build a solid foundation for the next year. MOST DON’T and year after year continue to build on a non solid base. The result is unhappy results that force most to make excuses and point fingers.

The solution is simple, you must have a plan. Have you ever planned out what you are going to learn for the next 12 months? What are you going to do this New Years? Will you have a 12 month plan on January 2008 so 2008 just doesn’t fly by?

I’d like to challenge you.

But first let me ask you a question,

Have you ever watched a football team do what is called the “2 Minute Drill?”.

They do this because in Pro Football there is a “2 Minute WARNING” before the end of the half and the end of the game.

What’s amazing is there are a Ton of points scored during the final 2 minutes. Here’s why.

The end is made very evident and the team focuses on achieving their goal before the end.

Of course there’s practice etc…BUT, the almighty unchangeable looming DEADLINE is really what creates the focus.

I’d like to give you a 100 day challenge.

Refocus your efforts and accomplish more in the last 100 days of this magnificent year than you did in the first 100 days.

Tick…Tick…Tick…

This is your 100 Day WARNING!
