Yesterday I sent out a video of an omo plata
attack that switched to a back take.
To me it’s a simple equation, you gotta have
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. option to all of your
attacks, and you start building these additional
movements once you master the base move.
Well I saw quite a few post that basically
said
**************************************
Why Not Just Finish The Omo Plata?
**************************************
Well I’m not sure how experienced the
people making these comments are but
it was posted enough that I would like to
address it.
THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE MOVE THAT HAS A 100%
FINISH RATE!
It’s like if I were to show an armlock, wrist lock,
or sweep while having someone in a triangle and
everyone saying, “Why Not Just Finish With The
Triangle”
Because things happen, people defend, angles are
incorrect, the list is long as to why some moves
don’t work.
It’s a reality that although you catch someone in
a triangle, omo plata or RNC, there is no guarantee
that you will finish with that triangle, omo plata
or RNC.
There are people that know how to escape these holds,
I see people get caught in them all the time, I see
people escape them all of the time, the game continues,
you have to transition into the next thing.
Of course if you can finish the initial attack, then
you should, that’s not the point of showing variations
to attacks.
ONE GUY PUT
***************************************************
why not just finish with omoplata? that is
just over complicating jiu jitsu. Simple works
better. Look at ryron gracie…simple but
effective attacks. Thats how he
beat todd and fowler.
**************************************************
What does Ryron Gracie beating todd and fowler
have to do with showing a secondary attack to a
omo plata?
I would bet my life that Ryron has secondary
attacks to all of his moves, he has to, everyone
has to.
I may be wrong on this but this is my belief.
Showing a secondary move/having a secondary move
to your initial attack isn’t over complicating
jiu jitsu. Just because you sometimes see
people finish with their initial attack doesn’t
mean that is the only thing that you can do.
NO JIU JITSU PLAYER ON EARTH IS AT A LEVEL THAT
THEY CAN GO OUT AND JUST DO THEIR INITIAL ATTACKS
AND COMPLETE THEM WITHOUT HAVING TO TRANSITION
TO OTHER ATTACKS!!! NO ONE!!!
Let me prove my point, if there was a person like
this, then in every match that they have, they
would go out, do their initial attacks directly
to the submission.
IT DOESN’T HAPPEN LIKE THAT
No people like Marcelo Garcia can do it alot, he
used to come out, shake handa, then armdrag people
and choke them from their backs, or he would shake
hands, pull guard, x-guard sweep them to their back
and choke them.
Now this example is extremely close but even
Marcelo had to go to his secondary moves, but
imagine if he didn’t have any or didn’t practice
and secondary moves.
The entire point of this is to hammer home my
position that you MUST practice secondary
moves once you get your primary move.
AND IT IS NOT OVER COMPLICATING JIU JITSU
Imagine having a person in an omo plata
who is super flexible and you can’t tap them,
what are you going to do, just sit there in that
position until the time runs out? I bet you would’nt
if you were down on points. You would have to
move, do you let them go back into your guard?
Do you try to sweep them? what do you do?
On the video that I showed yesterday we gave
you an option to take your opponents back, take
it for what it is, AN OPTION, it’s something
that you must have in this game of grappling, the
more options you can create for yourself the better
but of course, all of your options hopefully
ending in a submission.
Take Care and Have a Good weekend, I’m about to
head to the weigh ins for the UFC this weekend
my student Brandon Vera is fighting in the co main
event.
If you didn’t get a chance to see the video with
the omo plata back take you can check it out at the
